Position Description The senior machine design engineer, automation leads the design and development of automated machines and manufacturing processes that support the production of innovative medical devices at Applied Medical. This role contributes directly to manufacturing scalability, process efficiency, and product quality by delivering robust automation solutions from concept through commercialization. In addition to hands‑on technical leadership, the senior machine design engineer, automation provides project leadership by guiding cross‑functional teams, mentoring engineers, and ensuring automation designs meet technical, quality, and business requirements. Key Responsibilities<ul><li>Design automated machines and manufacturing processes in accordance with defined technical, quality, and safety standards.</li><li>Lead cross‑functional project teams by managing timelines, assigning work, and providing clear technical direction throughout project execution.</li><li>Review engineering and quality documentation to ensure compliance with Applied Medical manufacturing quality systems and project requirements.</li><li>Collaborate with internal partners and guide outside department team members to enable effective information transfer and project alignment.</li><li>Specify off‑the‑shelf machines and automated production equipment to support manufacturing and process needs.</li><li>Identify and specify production lines that require automation to improve efficiency, quality, and scalability.</li><li>Mentor and guide entry‑level engineers by reviewing work, providing technical feedback, and supporting professional development.</li><li>Partner with internal functional teams and external vendors to deliver integrated automation solutions.</li></ul>Success in This Role Looks Like<ul><li>Delivering automated manufacturing systems that meet performance, quality, and safety requirements.</li><li>Leading projects from concept through commercialization with clear direction, accountability, and execution discipline.</li><li>Strengthening engineering capability through mentorship, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing.</li><li>Ensuring engineering documentation and designs meet regulatory, quality, and operational standards.</li><li>Driving collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance, and vendor partners.</li><li>Contributing automation solutions that support long‑term operational efficiency and business growth.</li></ul> Position Requirements This position requires the following skills and attributes:<ul><li>Holds a bachelor of science degree in an engineering discipline.</li><li>Designs and troubleshoots fixtures, prototypes, and automated machines incorporating electro‑mechanical components such as sensors, safety systems, pneumatics, and drive systems.</li><li>Designs, modifies, and troubleshoots complex automated manufacturing equipment.</li><li>Updates and reviews three‑dimensional computer‑aided design models using SOLIDWORKS and maintains accurate bills of materials using Microsoft Excel.</li><li>Performs design of experiments to determine optimal equipment parameters and process performance.</li><li>Writes and updates maintenance manuals, manufacturing instructions, and calibration procedures for new and existing equipment.</li><li>Understands and follows Applied Manufacturing quality systems per training requirements.</li><li>Understands and complies with company safety rules and policies.</li><li>Brings greater than five years of experience in automated machine design.</li><li>Works in clean room, laboratory, and manufacturing environments as required.</li><li>Holds equivalent hands‑on experience as an engineering technician or machine designer in lieu of a formal degree when applicable.</li><li>Brings experience leading automation projects in regulated manufacturing environments such as medical device production.</li><li>Demonstrates proven ability to guide junior engineers and drive technical excellence across teams.</li><li>Applies strong problem‑solving skills to complex, multi‑variable automation challenges.</li></ul> Benefits <ul><li>Competitive compensation range: $100000 - $120000 / year (California). </li><li>Comprehensive benefits package. </li><li>Training and mentorship opportunities. </li><li>On-campus wellness activities. </li><li>Education reimbursement program. </li><li>401(k) program with discretionary employer match. </li><li>Generous vacation accrual and paid holiday schedule. </li></ul>Please note that the compensation range may be adjusted in the future, and bonus and incentive compensation plans may apply.
