Eurofins Environment Testing Australia is an Environmental testing network of fully accredited laboratories. With a staff of over 300 our laboratories are located in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and with Client Service Offices located in Adelaide, Darwin, Newcastle and Wollongong. We also operate field sampling services out of Melbourne and Sydney. We specialise in all areas of Environmental analysis, including Contaminated Soil, Sludge, Sediments, Leachate, Soil Vapour, Trade Waste Effluents, Sewage Effluents, Stack Emissions, Work Place Air, Ambient Air, Dust, Drinking Water, Surface Water run off, River & Stream Monitoring, Seawater, and Groundwater.

Full time positions based in Murarrie, QLD.

Shift times: 9:00am – 5:00pm

An extra 1.5% superannuation paid on top of National standard rate.

SUMMARY OF POSITION AND OBJECTIVES:

An Asbestos Analyst is responsible for the identification of asbestos fibres according to the ISO 17025 accredited laboratory test methods. This may be restricted to building materials only, or additionally be extended to soils with suitable training and experience. An Asbestos Analyst is responsible for the preparation and analysis of airborne fibre monitoring samples in accordance with the laboratory test method.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

An Asbestos Analyst should be familiar with all aspects of the laboratory test methods relating to their area of proficiency (identification of asbestos in building materials, and/or soils, and/or asbestos airborne fibre counting), and be able to carry out of any of these activities as required:

Perform routine asbestos analytical, physical tests and sample preparation as required.

Control own work flows.

Ensure samples are tested in a timely manner, completed, and integrity of results maintained. Ensure correct methods are used and adhered to.

Calibrate and maintain equipment, ensuring maintenance logs are kept up to date.

Ensure correct quality control procedures are used and adhered to, including Asbestos Internal Quality Control sample analysis.

Identify and report quality issues and implement the corrective and preventative actions.

Perform all of the analysis assigned by the section supervisor.

Monitor, encourage and support laboratory technicians as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

A minimum qualification of Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques or a related discipline is typically required. Candidates with relevant experience in a similar laboratory role or related field may also be considered.

Following an initial period of training, a new analyst must demonstrate compliance with the internal quality control requirements outlined in SOP05 before enrolment in a Proficiency Testing Program. This includes:

Completion of at least six internal QC slides for airborne fibre analysis and at least eight samples for asbestos identification.

Ongoing training until the required competency criteria are met.

Satisfactory completion of a proficiency testing round, demonstrating the ability to submit results using the required spreadsheet calculations.

Progression to Level 5 may be considered at the discretion of the Asbestos Supervisor or Regional Technical Manager, subject to appropriate supporting evidence.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND SUCCESS PROFILE:

Relevant tertiary qualification in Science, Environmental Science, Occupational Hygiene or a related discipline.

Demonstrated experience in asbestos analysis, including fibre counting using the membrane filter method and asbestos fibre identification in accordance with AS 4964 and AS 5370.

Experience in the calibration and maintenance of air sampling pumps and laboratory equipment.

Understanding of ISO 17025 and associated laboratory procedures, with the ability to identify and suggest quality improvements.

Experience processing laboratory data, maintaining accurate records and preparing analytical reports.

Comfortable working in a technical laboratory environment.

Strong attention to detail and observational skills.

Demonstrated willingness to continuously learn and improve.

Ability to work effectively in a hands-on environment and apply practical judgement and common sense.

Strong organisational and time-management skills.
