Principal Engineer – Applied ML/AI Algorithms R&D for Advanced Patient Monitoring
We are the people who give possibilities purpose BD is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world. Advancing the world of health™ is our Purpose, and it’s no small feat.
It takes the imagination and passion of all of us—from design and engineering to the manufacturing and marketing of our billions of MedTech products per year—to look at the impossible and find transformative solutions that turn dreams into possibilities. Job Description The Team The Applied ML/AI Algorithms team leads the development of advanced algorithms that power BD Advanced Patient Monitoring’s next generation of clinically impactful products.
We focus on transforming physiological signal data into actionable insights that improve patient monitoring, enable earlier intervention, and drive better outcomes. This team operates at the intersection of research, product, and clinical translation.
We partner closely with engineering, clinical, regulatory, and product teams to bring AI/ML innovations from concept to FDA-cleared, production-grade solutions. We emphasize rigorous science, practical product thinking, and a shared commitment to improving patient outcomes—accelerating innovation without compromising quality or clinician trust.
The Role We are seeking a Principal Engineer to develop and deploy advanced ML/AI models, including multimodal and foundation-model–inspired approaches, for physiological signal understanding and clinical decision support. This is a senior individual contributor role with significant technical responsibility.
You will lead the development of AI/ML solutions from concept through deployment, translating research-grade models into robust systems that meet real-world clinical constraints and needs. You will play a key role in advancing the team's technical capabilities by driving algorithm innovation, establishing engineering best practices, and contributing to scalable experimentation, reproducible workflows, and MLOps infrastructure.
You will work closely with data, product, systems, and clinical teams to bridge the gap between research and product development, helping deliver solutions that create meaningful clinical impact. Responsibilities Lead the development of AI/ML algorithms from early exploration through production deployment and commercialization, driving clinically meaningful outcomes Drive technical execution across complex projects spanning modeling, data, and software systems Translate clinical and product requirements into scalable AI/ML solutions Design solutions that are reliable, efficient, and deployable in regulated production environments Contribute to experimentation platforms, MLOps infrastructure, and development workflows that improve team velocity and reproducibility Mentor engineers and promote engineering best practices through technical leadership and collaboration Partner with clinical, regulatory, systems, and product teams to bring AI/ML solutions to market About You (Requirements) PhD with 2+ years, MS with 5+ years, or BS with 6+ years of experience in AI/ML, data science, or software engineering Experience developing and deploying applied AI, machine learning, LLM/LMM, agentic, or other decision and recommendation systems Demonstrated ability to drive and execute on complex technical and cross-functional projects in ambiguous problem spaces Strong experience developing AI/ML solutions using Python-based frameworks and libraries ( e.g.
TensorFlow, PyTorch ) , including shipping models across cloud and/or edge/embedded environments Experience developing production-grade ML/DL/AI models using modern engineering practices, including version control, testing, code review, CI/CD, and collaborative development workflows Experience designing robust model and data evaluation frameworks and working with real-world, imperfect datasets Motivated by applying AI to solve meaningful healthcare problems Bonus Experience with clinical decision support and physiological or medical time-series data Familiarity with clinical workflows or patient monitoring Experience with FDA-regulated or other regulated development environments Experience building data platforms, feature stores, or MLOps infrastructure to support ML development and experimentation Contributions to research publications, open-source projects, or industry thought leadership Why Join Us? To find purpose in the possibilities, we need people who can see the bigger picture, who understand the human story that underpins everything we do.
We welcome people with the imagination and drive to help us reinvent the future of healthcare. At BD, you’ll discover a culture in which you can learn, grow and thrive.
