From prenatal screening before birth to newborn screening shortly after birth and whole genome sequencing through one’s lifetime. We are seeking a Clinical Lab Technologist I at our Pittsburgh state-of-the-art omics laboratory to perform clinical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses that contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. Role & Responsibilities: Prepares specimens for analysis and organizes tests to be performed. Performs clinical testing according to standard operating procedures, related to specimen handling, processing, and test analyses.
Accesses and handles protected health information (PHI) according to laboratory policies and procedures and in a manner consistent with federal regulations. Prepares and properly labels reagents required for laboratory testing. Performs general laboratory duties such as glassware cleaning, reagent making, etc.
Verifies proper instrument function by checking and calibrating laboratory instruments and documents data. Maintains legible work records. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies and document all quality control activities. Follows the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the lab established acceptable levels of performance. Pays careful attention to detail during all laboratory tasks.
Follows instructions from Supervisors, and all Leadership. Maintains a clean and orderly work area. Performs all job duties in a manner consistent with, laboratory, CLIA, CAP and local regulations.
Maintains good communication with leadership, team members and customers. Follows safety, security, and the environment in all aspect of the daily activities and report any potential safety hazards to Supervisors; address them immediately if possible. Understands ergonomic relationship between people, equipment and working environment.

Other Additional Duties Assigned (Not exhaustive list of all potential duties) Records on instrument log any repairs, replacement and maintenance performed on laboratory instruments. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the lab’s established performance specifications.
Participates, as requested, in the training of new employees. Performs routine preventative maintenance on instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure. Reviews test results (if applicable).
Enters findings into the laboratory information systems. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the General Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, or Lab Director. Proficient in 50-75% departmental assays or processes as determined by the manager/supervisor.\ Solves problems pertaining to sample issues.
Provides minor direction to team to support shift efficiency and productivity. Proficiency greater than 75% of departmental assays or process as determined by the manager/supervisor. Assists Lead(s) with day-to-day tasks.
Acts as a subject matter expert in areas of testing and support problem investigation to resolution (Senior/Team Lead) Is proficient in all departmental assays or processes as determined by the department manager/supervisor (Senior/Team Lead) Oversees department laboratory operation under the guidance of the department manager/supervisor. Acts as liaison with other departments and customers on technical inquiries and test results\ Reviews and maintains daily QC logs and is involved in other QA/QC processes as assigned by the department manager/supervisor. Assigned projects related to quality improvement of existing assays and transfer of new methods into production.
Prepares laboratory for inspections and assists in inspections/audits as assigned by department manager/supervisor. Updates department SOPs and forms as assigned by department manager/supervisor. Participates in presenting continuing education information to staff.
Basic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical or biological science or clinical laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution 0-1-year of clinical laboratory experience Preferred Qualifications: Must be flexible with time and adaptable to change. Ability to work overtime as business needs. Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and the ability to work unsupervised.
Must be detail oriented, organized, with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to work effectively and able to deliver on tight datelines. Recommended Qualifications: Rertification by ASCP, AAB, AMT, or other licensing preferred.
Previous experience in job-related testing methods preferred. Good, accurate computer skills Working Conditions: Clinical Laboratory environment; exposure to blood borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals; must wear personal protective equipment including lab coat, gloves and completely closed footwear. Employee may be requested to work shifts other than daylight depending on the needs of the laboratory.
Weekend rotation may be required. Travel is not required. Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use a keyboard, type, and occasionally stand and move to other parts of the lab.
Must have manual dexterity to use lab equipment. Reach above/below the shoulder, bend at the knees and waist. Able to lift boxes up to 25 pounds May be required to stand for long periods of time.
The base salary range for this full-time position is $20/hr - $22/hr. This range reflects the minimum and maximum target for a new hire in this position. The base pay actually offered to the successful candidate will take into account internal equity, work location, and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
