About this role

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come.

Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Genentech! The Opportunity We are seeking a highly motivated and intellectually curious Scientist 2 to join the Immune Cloaking team within the Cell Therapy Technologies group.

In this role, you will be a core member of a multidisciplinary team focused on engineering next-generation allogeneic cell therapies. You will work on the frontier of immuno-oncology, designing and testing strategies to render CAR-T cells resistant to immune rejection. This is a lab-based role for a scientist who is energized by complex biological problems and is dedicated to translating mechanistic insights into clinical medicines.

Reporting to a Principal Scientist, you will function as a core experimentalist, contributing to the development of robust immune cloaking strategies. You will have the opportunity to leverage world-class capabilities in cell engineering, gene editing, and functional screening to overcome barriers to allogeneic cell therapy efficacy. You will work closely with cross-functional project teams to advance our immune cloaking programs, ensuring high-quality data generation and rigorous scientific interpretation.

Key Responsibilities: Experimental Design & Execution: Independently design, execute, and interpret complex experiments to validate novel immune cloaking targets and mechanisms. Proactively brainstorm next steps and troubleshoot experimental bottlenecks. Data Analysis & Record Keeping: Maintain meticulous laboratory records, including timely adherence to Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) standards, to ensure data integrity and traceability.

Communication: Present research findings through high-quality internal presentations at group meetings and to cross-functional project teams. Team Collaboration: Foster a collaborative culture by sharing expertise, providing technical mentorship where appropriate, and contributing to a safe and efficient lab environment. Who You Are Education: Bachelor’s/Master’s degree with 5+ years of industry experience in a cell therapy team generating and characterizing CAR-T cells.

Core Technical Skills: Cell Culture: Extensive experience with isolation and culture of primary T, NK and myeloid cells. Gene delivery and editing: Delivery of non-viral payloads to create genetically engineered cells. Assay Proficiency: Hands-on experience designing and executing multi-color flow cytometry (10+ colors) and the development and execution of cell-based killing and functional assays.

Molecular Biology: Proficiency in plasmid design and cloning. Ability to execute qPCR and RT-PCR assays. Scientific Rigor: Ability to independently design, execute, and interpret controlled experiments.

Prior experience writing IND-enabling documents preferred. Soft Skills: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate scientific data effectively in cross-functional forums. Motivation: A genuine enthusiasm for collaborative, team-based science and the curiosity to explore unconventional ideas.
