Position Summary
The Transportation Manager leads all operational, safety, and customer‑facing aspects of a specialized transportation group focused on non‑standard or high‑complexity freight. This role ensures flawless execution of specialized shipments, regulatory compliance, equipment readiness, and strategic coordination with customers, carriers, and internal teams. The manager is accountable for service quality, risk mitigation, and operational efficiency across all specialized transport activities.
What You'll Do as a Transportation Manager
- ✓Collaborate and execute specialized transportation strategy for STERIS
- ✓Oversee planning, routing, permitting, and execution of specialized loads (e.g., heavy haul, hazmat, temperature‑controlled, high‑value) for STERIS Business Units
- ✓Manage temperature‑controlled, time‑sensitive, and chain‑of‑custody medical shipments; ensure proper handling of biologics and sterile products.
- ✓Select, qualify, and manage specialized carriers and equipment vendors
- ✓Support all aspects of transportation for STERIS’ Specialized Transportation needs (ORC and Tanker businesses for example)
- ✓Via TMS or other means, develop carrier and spend reporting metrics that show detailed spend breakdowns by BU/Product and then by (inbound, outbound, expedite, service level, etc)
- ✓Monitor cost performance, margin health, accessorials, utilization, and customer/carrier scorecard metrics
- ✓Conduct weekly, monthly, and quarterly KPI and operational meetings with partner companies
- ✓Engage with partner companies for current and future opportunities
- ✓Ensure compliance with FMCSA, DOT, PHMSA, EPA, OSHA, and state hazmat regulations; conduct audits of our partner carriers to ensure driver endorsements and hazmat certifications are current
- ✓Rollout, within the TMS, an efficient FBAP process via 3rd party vendor(s)
- ✓Identify operational inefficiencies, implement process improvements, and enhance safety and service outcomes
- ✓Support all necessary supplier audits including commercial, financial, and technical to ensure that STERIS maintains and continues to develop a robust and capable supply base
- ✓Other duties as assigned.
The Experience, Skills, and Abilities Required
- ✓Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in logistics and transportation management with a proven track record in specialized, hazmat, reefer, or high -value transportation with a bachelor's degree in Business or Operations/Supply Chain (or related field) OR fourteen (14) years of experience with a high school diploma / GED.
- ✓Minimum of two-three years of supervisory, management, or management of dedicated contract logistics oversight or operational responsibility.
- ✓Familiarity with TMS platforms, ELDs, routing tools, and compliance systems
- ✓Proven experience in identifying, establishing, and cultivating long-term, strategic supplier relationships
- ✓Demonstrated knowledge/experience in advanced operational practices (i.e., Lean, Six Sigma)
- ✓Strong knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and hazmat regulations
- ✓Ability to analyze data, manage KPIs, and make operational decisions under pressure
- ✓Excellent communication and customer‑facing skills
- ✓P&L experience is a plus
- ✓Experience managing multi‑state and / or multiple operational site partner specialized operations
- ✓Experience with high‑sensitive or high‑value cargo

Pay range for this opportunity is $92,650.00 - $119,900.00. [ACTION REQUIRED - REMOVE IF NOT APPLICABLE:] This position is eligible for bonus participation.
Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed. Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.
