A Day in the Life Job Specific Summary field Surgical Japan is focused on advancing surgical care through a portfolio of technologies that support clinicians and healthcare systems in improving patient outcomes. The function partners closely with commercial, marketing, finance, regulatory, operations, and global stakeholders to shape growth strategy, optimize portfolio investments, and identify new business opportunities that support long-term market leadership in Japan.
This position is based in Japan and operates in a hybrid work environment. Travel is expected to be approximately 5% and may include engagement with internal stakeholders, regional and global teams, and business partners as needed. Position Summary The Director, Strategy & Business Development is responsible for shaping and driving the long-term growth strategy for Surgical Japan.
This role leads strategic planning and PMO activities, portfolio management, and business development efforts to accelerate sustainable growth and strengthen Medtronic's leadership position in the Japanese surgical market. The position serves as a strategic advisor to the Japan Surgical Leadership Team and works closely with global, regional, and local stakeholders to identify, evaluate, and execute strategic priorities. While this is an individual contributor role without direct people management responsibilities, the successful candidate is expected to provide leadership through influence, collaboration, and cross-functional engagement.
Key Responsibilities Strategic Planning & PMO Lead the strategic planning process and development of long-term growth plans for Surgical Japan. Translate market insights and business priorities into clear strategic imperatives. Facilitate business reviews and track progress against agreed strategic imperatives and key milestones.
Establish governance and provide PMO leadership for strategic and cross-functional initiatives. Lead or support critical projects across Surgical and broader Medtronic organizations, as needed. Provide strategic recommendations and decision support to the Japan Surgical Leadership Team.
Portfolio Management & Business Development Develop portfolio strategies aligned with Surgical Japan growth objectives. Identify portfolio gaps and evaluate opportunities for new products, technologies, partnerships, and adjacent business expansion. Collaborate with Marketing and other functions to assess market opportunities, customer needs, and competitive dynamics.
Build business cases and lead cross-functional evaluation and execution of approved opportunities. Leadership & Stakeholder Management Serve as a trusted strategic advisor to the VP, Japan Surgical and Leadership Team. Influence and align stakeholders across Marketing, Sales, Finance, Regulatory, Operations, and Global teams.
Lead cross-functional initiatives and project teams through influence, collaboration, and accountability rather than direct reporting relationships. Foster strong internal and external relationships to advance Surgical Japan's strategic priorities. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree required; MBA preferred.
8+ years of experience in strategy, marketing, business planning, business development, healthcare, medical device, or related industries. Demonstrated success in strategic planning, marketing, portfolio management, business development, or other growth-oriented business functions. Strong analytical, business planning, and project management skills.
Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence stakeholders without direct authority. Strong communication and presentation skills in both Japanese and English. Preferred Experience in Surgical Devices and Technologies, or Healthcare Innovation.
Experience developing and executing business strategies that delivered measurable business outcomes. Experience working in a complex matrix organization with local, regional, and global stakeholders.
