About this role

Position Summary

The Laboratory Technician I is responsible for performing microbiological processes and techniques to support the testing and analysis of Customer samples. They will be multiskilled in a variety of laboratory test areas and operate a range of different equipment and machinery. The Laboratory Technician I is responsible for abiding to defined quality procedures, ensuring all test records are accurately completed and for supporting an efficient and on time service to the STERIS Customer base.

Specific Job Duties

  • Complete the testing of Customer samples within the Laboratory environment; meticulously adhering to procedures and Customer specific requirements.
  • Perform microbiological and chemistry procedures and techniques, including, but not limited to use of aseptic technique, microbiological identifications, culture preparation, LAL Endotoxin testing, bioburden, environmental monitoring, biological indicator testing, product inoculations and sterility testing.
  • Operate laboratory equipment and machinery, including, but not limited to autoclaves, balances, heating mantles, gas chromatographs, incubators, laminar air flows, cleanrooms, pH meters, filtration apparatus, temperature monitoring systems, pipettes, thermometers, kinetic and gel clot equipment, MALDI-ToF.
  • Manage, record, and monitor consumable stocks relating to the Laboratory to ensure adequate stocks of supplies are maintained at all times, observing FIFO (First in first out) If applicable to ensure no time sensitive stock is wasted.
  • Generate accurate certificates of analysis following Customer testing to enable them to be subsequently approved right first time and on time for the Customer.
  • Ensure individual tasks as per the daily schedule are completed to guarantee on-time-delivery for the Customer.
  • Maintain clear communication with senior laboratory personnel, promptly raising any issues encountered.
  • Perform routine quality control checks and calibrate laboratory equipment for optimal performance.
  • Maintaining accurate and sufficiently detailed records of all tasks performed, ensuring all documentation meets Good Document Practice (GDP) including protocols, reports, procedures, policies, test reports, logbooks and internal records.
  • Ensure the Laboratory unit is maintained in a clean and orderly condition, completing general housekeeping tasks in test rooms including the disposal of laboratory waste (cardboard, glass, waste containers).

General Laboratory Duties

  • To ensure all laboratory work is carried out in compliance with local Safety, Health and Welfare regulations and all relevant statutory provisions in conjunction with the laboratory staff and under the direction of the laboratory senior management team.
  • Ensure personal protective clothing equipment is worn in accordance with the Health & Safety policy and continuously monitor work area for unsafe acts or conditions taking immediate action to correct.
  • To ensure all work in the laboratory is carried out in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice, ISO13485 (Current Revision), ISO17025 (Current Revision) accreditation requirements, internal procedures and in conjunction with the laboratory staff and under the direction of the laboratory senior management team.
  • To deal with all STERIS, Customer, and internal parties’ information with strict confidentiality at all times and in a professional manner.
  • Play an active role in contributing towards the facility achieving monthly on time delivery targets and adhering to Customer lead times.
  • To alert a member of the senior laboratory management team to any process, job related problems or discrepancies. To be proactive in highlighting and resolving situations to support turnaround time adherence and testing requirements.

Education Degree

Bachelor's Degree in Science

Required Experience

1 No prior work experience required with minimum education level.

2 Three (3) years’ experience working in a laboratory environment as a Laboratory Assistant or similar.

  • Knowledge of general microbiology techniques
  • Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
  • Competent using Microsoft Office (i.e. PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
