About this role

Work Schedule Standard Office Hours (40/wk) Environmental Conditions Office Job Description As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you’ll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer.

Description Join our Software Deployment Platform (SDP) team as a Staff Engineer - Compute Infrastructure. The Software Deployment Platform enables the delivery of on-premise, software-based workflow applications, providing the infrastructure to run processing workloads, connect multiple tools, manage data, and streamline customer workflows. SDP is a virtualization-based platform deployed on dedicated server and workstation hardware configurations.

In this role, you will provide technical leadership for the underlying hardware infrastructure on which SDP runs. You will translate platform and product needs into hardware requirements, define and evolve supported configurations, and own the hardware lifecycle from introduction through replacement and end-of-life. Working closely with the SDP software engineers, you will analyze system behavior and identify opportunities to improve performance, stability, and scalability across the software and hardware stack.

You will also own the hardware infrastructure used by the SDP team for development, build, and test activities, helping ensure it remains reliable, scalable, and aligned with the team’s needs. You will collaborate with suppliers, Procurement, Operations Engineering, Service, and IT. This includes understanding supplier technology roadmaps, planning for obsolescence, improving consistency and cost efficiency, and helping ensure both internal development infrastructure and customer-facing hardware configurations are supported throughout their lifecycle.

As a Staff Engineer, you will guide complex infrastructure decisions and help shape the longer-term hardware strategy for SDP. Key responsibilities Own the server, workstation, storage, networking, GPU, and related hardware configurations on which SDP is deployed. Translate platform and product requirements into hardware specifications and manage hardware lifecycle activities, including new introductions, upgrades, replacements, and obsolescence.

Support Non-Standard Request (NSR) activities by defining and validating tailored hardware configurations required to host SDP for specific customer or application needs. Analyse system performance, stability, and scalability together with SDP software engineers and suppliers, and help resolve hardware- and infrastructure-related bottlenecks. Maintain and improve the development, build, and test hardware infrastructure used by the SDP scrum team, including alignment with IT on networking, hosting, rack space, power, cooling, and related infrastructure needs.

Collaborate with suppliers and Procurement on technology roadmaps and developments in compute, GPU, storage, and networking technologies, identifying opportunities to improve sourcing, consistency, cost, and platform capabilities. Partner with Operations Engineering and Service to help ensure customer-facing hardware solutions can be introduced, integrated, maintained, and serviced effectively, including creation of the required technical documentation and training for Service on new hardware solutions. Requirements Academic degree in a relevant technical field, with at least 8 years of relevant experience in systems engineering, computer engineering, infrastructure engineering, product development, or a related discipline.

Strong knowledge of server and workstation hardware, including compute, GPU, memory, storage, and networking technologies. Hands-on experience with IT and datacenter hardware, including rack installation, component replacement and upgrades, cabling, networking, power, and infrastructure troubleshooting. Experience translating software and system requirements into hardware architectures, specifications, and supported configurations.

Experience with hardware lifecycle management, supplier collaboration, and technology roadmap planning. Understanding of system performance, reliability, capacity, and scalability, with experience troubleshooting hardware and infrastructure issues. Experience with virtualization platforms and the hardware/software interface, including firmware, BIOS/UEFI, device drivers, operating systems, hardware compatibility, and related platform technologies, is preferred.

Ability to collaborate effectively across software development, Procurement, Operations Engineering, Service, IT, and external suppliers, and to help guide technical decisions across teams. Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical leadership skills.
