The Position
The Research Technician I provides daily husbandry support for our AAALAC accredited San Diego vivarium. Daily husbandry support includes morning and afternoon cage-side health observations for the mice and rats, bi-weekly cage changes, animal receiving and ear tagging, and general room upkeep. Additional duties include various vivarium sanitation tasks, such as cleaning cage equipment, sanitizing procedure and storage rooms, inventory and supply management, and other duties as assigned.
This role is onsite 5 days a week in San Diego.
Responsibilities
- ✓Performs animal health checks which may include performing post dose observations and documents study related health changes
- ✓Performs sanitation of vivarium
- ✓Performs routine cage changes
- ✓Performs routine animal colony health surveillance
- ✓Performs general husbandry duties
Performs animal receiving
- ✓Housing
- ✓Ear tagging
- ✓Create cage cards
- ✓Update study in Benchling In Vivo
- ✓May assist with In Vivo activities such as labeling tubes, shaving animals prior to surgery, or euthanizing animals
Assists with Operations / Administrative Activities
- ✓Updates inventory of commonly used supplies
- ✓Maintains and updates study paperwork
- ✓May work with the mouse breeding colony
- ✓Weekend and holiday health checks
- ✓Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- ✓High school diploma with 1+ years of demonstrated experience working with rodents in a research laboratory setting
- ✓Background in animal husbandry, restraint and handling preferred
- ✓Must demonstrate a commitment to quality care of laboratory animals
- ✓Must possess a strong attention to detail
- ✓Ability to read, record and communicate information
Preferred
- ✓Associate Degree in Biology, Vet Technician, Laboratory Animal Technician, Biotechnology or similar area of study (or equivalent High School Diploma and 4 years in an animal laboratory setting)
- ✓Must demonstrate a commitment to quality care of laboratory animals
California pay range
$50,000—$55,000 USD
