You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement. Role 1 – Engineering – Ware Degree requirements: any Engineering discipline, including (but not limited to) Mechanical, Chemical, Automation, Electrical, Mechatronic, Robotics or related. Workplace arrangements – Full time onsite required Overview of the Department This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience within a world-class pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. You will work alongside experienced engineers, supporting projects that improve equipment reliability, manufacturing performance, sustainability and digital innovation.

Key Placement Activities Support engineering projects from concept through to implementation and qualification. Assist with the installation, commissioning and improvement of manufacturing equipment and utilities. Contribute to equipment reliability and maintenance activities, helping to improve safety, performance and operational efficiency.

Work with automation, control systems and digital technologies to support manufacturing improvements. Use data analysis and visualisation tools to identify trends and support data-driven decision making. Participate in continuous improvement projects, applying structured problem-solving techniques.

Role 2 - Chemical Engineering – Montrose Degree requirements: Related science/engineering degree Workplace arrangements: Full time onsite Overview of the Department The Manufacturing Science and Technology Engineering Associate supports engineers in monitoring process performance, analysing manufacturing data, and driving continuous process improvements within a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. The role contributes to process mapping activities, evaluation and implementation of new or modified equipment and technologies, and supports deviation investigations to ensure operational excellence and compliance. Working closely with cross-functional teams, the position helps optimise manufacturing processes, improve throughput, and enhance process control to deliver reliable and efficient production outcomes.

The role also provides opportunities for professional engineering development while strengthening collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and risk assessment capabilities. Key Placement Learnings Support MSAT engineers with process monitoring, performance analysis, and data-driven decision making to optimise manufacturing performance. Assist with process mapping, workflow evaluation, and identification of process improvement opportunities.

Participate in the assessment, implementation, and validation of new or modified equipment and technologies. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on process efficiency, quality, throughput optimisation, and process control. Support deviation investigations, root cause analysis, and risk assessment activities to ensure robust manufacturing processes.

Collaborate with manufacturing, engineering, quality, and technical teams while maintaining accurate documentation and supporting compliance requirements. Role 3 - Process Engineering Automation & Modelling – Stevenage Degree requirements: Any computational degree, e.g., Computer Science, Data Science or a STEM degree with computational interests and experience with programming Workplace arrangements: Flexible working via performance with choice (office and home working available) Overview of the Department Process Engineering & Analytics (PE&A) is a multidisciplinary, digital-first centre of excellence that transforms data, knowledge, and technology into a sustained competitive advantage for delivery across medicines and vaccines. By combining engineering, modelling, automation, analytics, and advanced digital capabilities, the department supports the broader business ambition to accelerate drug development with reduced risk and greater efficiency.

Engineers and scientists work collaboratively to solve real-world challenges across multiple modalities, including vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, and small molecules, and at all stages of development from laboratory and pilot-scale environments through to commercial manufacturing. PE&A enables medicine development teams to adopt and embed innovative digital solutions that support pipeline delivery, scalable impact, and long-term value creation. Key Placement Learnings Develop expertise in building and deploying control and orchestration systems that enable efficient, scalable, and automated process development workflows.

Create and apply process models and simulation tools to support process understanding, virtual experimentation, and data-driven decision-making across pharmaceutical development. Contribute to the democratisation of modelling capabilities by developing accessible digital solutions that enable scientists and engineers to leverage advanced modelling approaches in their day-to-day work. Explore and implement AI-driven and agentic workflows to automate complex tasks, accelerate insight generation, and support in-silico experimentation and process optimisation.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, and digital specialists to deliver innovative modelling, automation, and digital transformation solutions to real-world development challenges. Strengthen technical communication, problem-solving, and project delivery skills through the development and presentation of technical outputs, while adhering to departmental safety, quality, and compliance standards. Role 4 - Medicine Development and Industrialisation – Sustainability - Ware or Montrose Degree requirements: Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Data Science or other Science-related discipline Workplace arrangements: Flexible working via performance with choice (office and home working available) Overview of the Department GSK has ambitious environmental sustainability goals to have a net zero impact on climate and a net positive impact on nature by 2030 across our entire end to end value chain.

The Medicine Development and Industrialisation team is responsible for defining and delivering technical aspects of the sustainability strategy, namely Ecodesign (how we design and develop our products & processes to make them more sustainable) within legacy, next generation and new products within the GSK Global Supply Chain (GSC) product portfolio. Within this role, you will assist in delivering the technical aspects of the GSK sustainability strategy. You will do this by supporting a team of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) specialists to develop and identify environmental impact reduction plans, working to deliver GSK’s commitment to a nature positive world, by reducing our environmental impacts across, carbon, water, materials, and biodiversity.

Furthermore, you will engage in delivering reduction strategies and project initiatives on identified hotspots, from raw materials, our processes (product & packaging), to patient use, which are significant to our ambition. Key Placement Activities Support the development of a standard approach to LCA, managing data, documents, and outputs. Assist with streamlining and automation of product LCA.

Develop your scientific/technical knowledge of GSK’s pharmaceutical products and processes. Learn how to drive positive change in sustainability, building relationships across multiple interfaces in a matrix environment. Build your teamworking and communication skills by working collaboratively both with co-workers and other functions.

Enhance your written skills through technical report writing Role 5 – Mechanical Engineering – Montrose Degree requirements: Mechanical Engineering Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required Overview of the Department GSK Montrose manufactures a range of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for respiratory, dermatological and HIV conditions. The Production Engineering team provides support to five key manufacturing areas producing multiple APIs. The team consists of Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Inspection, HVAC Engineering, Reliability Engineering and Engineering Maintenance.

On a daily basis, the team reacts to resolve any plant breakdown situations. Longer term actions focus on improving efficiency, operability and maintenance of plant. The department also supports the utilities and infrastructure strategy and provides solutions to engineering problems throughout the business.

Key Placement Learnings Ownership of maintenance life cycle plans (establish, update, review) Perform failure investigations Develop technical specification of maintenance contracts Technical input and approvals under the Plant Modification Procedure Make recommendations on technically complex issues through evaluating engineering problems that have a potential business impact. Take account of legal, regulatory and financial implications of engineering standards and changes. Ensure that asset care activities are performed in a compliant manner.

Understand appropriate commitments/requirements of the Quality Management System. Follow the principles of Good Manufacturing Practice. Role 6 – Mechanical Engineering – Worthing Degree requirements: Any Engineering discipline Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required Overview of the Department There are several Mechanical Engineering opportunities available at the Worthing site.

Within the Manufacturing area, you will be working with highly competent engineers within a highly regulated environment, on equipment which produced numerous APIs. Within the packaging department, you will experience high speed packaging lines and the importance of a strong reliability programme to maintain successful Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). In our production and technical teams, you will support day to operations by conducting root cause analysis to meet our high specifications in quality and Environmental Health and Sustainability (EHS).

The utilities and facilities team supports Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) critical systems (water, HVAC, steam, compressed etc.), industrial utilities (waste treatment, chillers, cooling towers) and is the interface with our 3rd party service providers for both our main manufacturing site and our R&D facility. Key Placement Learnings Supporting delivery of the Mechanical, Inspection and Reliability programmes Investigating new engineering technologies to improve plant and maintenance techniques Development and implementation of maintenance best practice Specifying new equipment and components Performing root cause analysis investigations and contributing to safety and quality risk assessments Carrying out continuous improvement activities to ensure good manufacturing practice Gaining a thorough understanding of the equipment, plant and processes used at the site including mechanical design of systems and the ability to problem solve Leading and managing groups of peers or contractors Developing skills in project management and planning projects such as plant modifications, building turnarounds and production line safety improvements Role 7 - Facilities Engineering – Barnard Castle Degree requirements: Currently studying an Undergraduate Degree in Engineering: Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Engineering, Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering. Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required Overview of the Department RSC Assembly Engineering manage and improve the Assembly platforms to enable maximum production opportunity.

Managing maintenance, breakdowns, obsolescence programs, capital projects and equipment performance to maximise business benefit and strategic objectives. Key Placement Activities Change management (Change controls) Identification and development of business cases for continuous improvement Root cause analysis Supporting design for equipment upgrades Leading meetings Document updates Stakeholder management Change management Role 8 – R&D Engineering Services – Stevenage Degree requirements: Any Engineering Degree Overview of the Department R&D Engineering Services delivers facilities management, engineering and capital project services that support Research & Development. Working closely with suppliers, the team ensures research environments are safe, reliable, compliant and sustainable, supporting more than 13,000 people across 14 sites in six countries, covering 4.7 million square feet with an annual budget exceeding £400 million.

As part of the R&D Engineering Services Global and Europe Engineering teams, you will gain exposure to engineering standards and compliance, asset lifecycle management, energy and sustainability initiatives, capital planning and cross-functional projects. You will work alongside experienced multi-disciplinary engineers who will provide coaching and mentoring throughout your placement, while contributing to projects ranging from equipment installations and calibration to cyber security and environmental initiatives that support GSK’s 2030 Environmental and Sustainability Targets. Key Placement Learnings Build an understanding of site equipment, processes and engineering systems, developing strong problem-solving skills.

Use specialist engineering software to support engineering and maintenance activities. Support the delivery and continuous improvement of engineering, inspection and reliability programmes. Research, specify and implement new equipment, technologies and best-practice maintenance solutions.

Perform root cause investigations and contribute to safety, quality and risk assessments. Develop project management, planning and leadership skills while working Role 9 – Chemical Engineering – Ware Degree requirements: Chemical Engineering Overview of the Department The Chemical Engineering teams at Ware support several initiatives, such as the manufacturing of Oral Solid Dose products for global supply and New Product Introduction. The Manufacturing Science and Technology department then monitor the performance of products and platforms within the Oral Solid Dose, Respiratory and Micronising value streams, overseeing all aspects of product lifecycle management.

You could be placed within either of these departments, supporting the transfer and development of manufacturing process from R&D to GSC, including preparation activities and set-up, troubleshooting/problem solving and process improvements. Additional duties may include introduction and scale up of newly developed R&D assets to ensuring robust and repeatable manufacture of commercialised pharmaceutical products, as well as ensuring that equipment is capable of handling product materials and that such platforms are optimised to allow for efficient performance. As a member of DSD, you will use your engineering knowledge and expertise to develop and deploy state-of-the-art processes and technology to enable the delivery of GSK medicines. Key Placement Activities Design and perform scale up/down experiments in chemical engineering unit operations to develop understanding against fast paced project timelines Think creatively to optimise engineering solutions and de-risk scale-up processes. Ensure that experimental work is communicated effectively at internal R&D meetings and develop your teamworking skills.

Participate in technology transfer activities as appropriate to GSK manufacturing partners. Author or contribute to internal documentation relevant to the role. Comply with applicable Data Integrity, Quality, cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) and regulatory requirements in all aspects of work and fully embrace all aspects of safety when working in the laboratory.
