The Cell Therapy Thematic Research Center is one of BMS’s differentiated research platforms delivering innovative therapies to patients. Our mission is to drive leadership in the use of cellular therapies to harness the power of the immune system in treating hematologic malignancies, solid cancers, and autoimmune disease. More specifically, our discovery and translational scientists are focused on developing next-generation, engineered cell-based therapies.
The team is committed to discovering and developing transformative therapies that harness the power of the immune system to improve patient outcomes.
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Senior Scientist, Targeted Delivery Biology to join BMS's Non-Viral Delivery team and help define the next frontier in targeted delivery biology at an exciting inflection point in the field. As part of a dynamic and cross-functional team, you will drive the mechanistic understanding and biological optimization of targeted nanoparticle delivery systems, pushing the boundaries of selective and efficient delivery to unlock therapeutic access into new cell types and tissues. This role sits at the intersection of cell biology, receptor biology, and delivery sciences, representing a rare opportunity to contribute foundationally to a growing platform and work at the cutting edge of non-viral delivery biology to help shape the next generation of targeted therapeutics.
The ideal candidate brings deep scientific curiosity, a passion for solving complex delivery challenges, and thrives in a fast-paced, highly collaborative research environment.
Position Responsibilities
In the role as a Senior Scientist, Targeted Delivery Biology within the Non-Viral Delivery Research team, the ideal candidate will:
- ✓Design and apply mechanistic and functional assays to interrogate nanoparticle delivery across key biological barriers, from cellular uptake and endosomal escape to functional payload activity, and translate findings into actionable design principles that guide nanoparticle optimization and next-generation delivery strategies.
- ✓Establish cell-based approaches to identify and validate receptors for targeted delivery, investigating key receptor properties, including expression, accessibility, internalization kinetics, and trafficking, to optimize delivery efficiency and selectivity.
- ✓Contribute to internal and external efforts in receptor identification and targeting ligand discovery and development to enable targeted delivery into new cell types and tissues.
- ✓Develop and apply in vitro safety and biocompatibility assays to characterize biological responses to nanoparticle delivery systems and support early identification and mitigation of delivery-related liabilities.
- ✓Contribute to the evaluation and assessment of emerging delivery technologies, applying delivery-relevant biological and functional criteria to support platform and lead selection decisions.
- ✓Collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams, including formulation and delivery sciences, protein engineering, analytical development, and pharmacology, to translate biological insights into improved delivery platform design.
- ✓Effectively communicate scientific findings and actionable recommendations to multidisciplinary teams and leadership to influence delivery strategy and program decisions.
- ✓Provide scientific mentorship to junior scientists and contribute to the development of new experimental approaches and technologies.
Basic Qualifications
- ✓Bachelor’s Degree
- ✓7+ years of academic and / or industry experience
Or
- ✓Master’s Degree
- ✓5+ years of academic and / or industry experience
Or
- ✓Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences
- ✓2+ of academic and / or industry experience
Preferred Qualifications
- ✓PhD in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related discipline with 2+ years of relevant industry experience; or MS with 5+ years; or BS with 7+ years of relevant experience.
- ✓Strong background in cell biology and quantitative cell-based assay development, with demonstrated ability to design and apply experiments to address mechanistic biological questions.
- ✓Strong understanding of receptor-mediated delivery, including the key properties that influence productive cellular uptake and delivery.
- ✓Experience developing and applying quantitative and functional cell-based assays across a range of imaging, flow cytometry, molecular biology, and biochemical methods.
- ✓Experience with nanoparticles, lipid nanoparticles, liposomes, extracellular vesicles, biologics, nucleic acid delivery systems, antibody-drug conjugates, or other complex delivery modalities is preferred.
- ✓Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and thrive in a highly collaborative, cross-functional research environment.
