Principal Scientist - In Vivo Expert, CVRI (Cardiovascular, Renal & Immunology) Bayer has an opening for a Principal Scientist to join our Cardiovascular-Renal In Vitro Research group based at the Bayer Innovation Campus at the heart of Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA, with the goal to enhance internal expertise in the heart and kidney in vivo biology space.

We are looking for a scientist with significant hands-on expertise in utilizing mechanistic and disease renal and cardiac in vivo models to enable the characterization of novel drug targets or therapeutic molecules. Specifically, the candidate will design and conduct experimental research studies at the bench, coach research associates, and propose therapeutics project(s) targeting cardiac or renal (including cardio-renal metabolic) disease.

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated candidate interested in exploring the early stages of drug development in a vibrant and collaborative atmosphere.  YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSBILITIES The primary responsibilities of the Principal Scientist are to: <ul style="margin-bottom: 0in; margin-top: 0px;" type="disc"><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Responsible for identifying and setting up relevant mechanistic and disease in vivo models to support cardiovascular and renal projects from target identification to preclinical candidate acceptance and early clinical development including hands-on experimentation, analysis of data and presentation to cross-functional project teams; </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Prepare and update experimental protocols; </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Independently perform data analysis and effectively interpret results;  </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Support evaluation of external innovation landscape in the field of in vivo models and connection to external partners (CROs, academic partners); </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Lead novel target proposals and experimental validation to support growth of our early cardiovascular & renal portfolio including presentation at internal governance; </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Support BD&L assessment of external targets and programs to understand the competitive landscape and identify potential opportunities for collaboration or technological innovation;  </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Engage in close collaboration with scientists and technical staff of the In Vivo Cluster based at the German sites to share knowledge, drive progress and stimulate innovation; </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Lead publication of results, prepare reports and presentations at both internal and external forums; </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Coach research associates in a matrix organization;</li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Collaborate effectively with colleagues and interdisciplinary teams both within Bayer and with external collaborators;   </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Ensure that all tasks are aligned with respect to HSE guidelines, animal welfare law and regulations, documentation guidelines, and good research practices. </li></ul> WHO YOU ARE Your success will be driven by your demonstration of our life values, more specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following: Required qualifications: <ul style="margin-bottom: 0in; margin-top: 0px;" type="disc"><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">A Ph.D. in Biology (Cellular, Molecular or Developmental Biology), Biochemistry, or related life science field;</li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">A background in cardiorenal disease biology would be highly advantageous;</li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">In depth expertise and hands-on experience in mechanistic and disease renal and cardiac in vivo models and its translation to cardiovascular or renal disease modeling and drug discovery;</li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Hands-on experience in setting up and characterizing in vivo renal and cardiac rodent models for disease modeling and profiling of drug candidates; </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Strong expertise in clinically relevant readouts (including imaging, hemodynamics, and biomarker) to characterize in vivo models; </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Track record of working on complex problems, and ability to integrate data from multiple disciplines;</li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Strong interpersonal, influencing, and collaboration skills to work in a team-oriented, matrix environment, and the ability to work through conflicts;</li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">Must demonstrate outstanding personal initiative, and accountability, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team;  </li><li style="margin-top: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in;" type="disc"><li style="color: #32363a; margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;">8+ years of relevant post-PhD experience including 4+ years in industry is preferred, with a proven record of successful team leadership and interaction with collaborators </li></ul> Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $139,840.00- $209,760.00. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant).
